Its colonial style, its archaeological sites, its traditions, its colors and flavors, make this state one of the most beautiful territories in the country.
Start looking for cheap flights on Interjet and enjoy the best tourist attractions in Campeche. Here we mention some of them:
This awesome archaeological site, capital of the Kann Mayan Kingdom during the VII century AD, along with its Biosphere Reserve, is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its 2,792 mi² are home to a large and diverse number of birds, reptiles, mammals, butterflies and plants.
In spite of its name, this fishing port is not an island, but a small natural barrier located between the famous Terminos Lagoon and the Gulf of Mexico. Thanks to its low number of inhabitants, it keeps virgin beaches that offer multiple locations to rest and relax.
Halfway between the capital of the state and Mérida you can find this charming city. Its name means “throat of the sun” in Yucatec Maya. One of its main attractions is the Celestun Biosphere Reserve, a great place to admire pink flamingos, crocodiles and more than 90 species of birds, as frigates and pelicans.
Its warm weather, its beautiful beaches and its historical monuments will make you fall in love with this small town. Its main natural attraction, Champotón River, is the ideal place to practice sport fishing. Here, you should make a stop around the mangroves to see great examples of the regional flora and fauna.
In almost all of Campeche, military architecture is quite important given the English pirate attacks of the 18th century, when fortresses had to be built to protect the state from such invasions. The most iconic of them all is the Fuerte de San José, which is still preserved and serves now as the Museo de Barcos y Armas. You will also find the Museo Arqueológico de Campeche, which possesses important antiques from the Mayan Civilization. You may even be lucky to enter a jail cell where pirates where held prisoners.
